Backpack Size Chart

Measure backpack back length

To ensure backpacks fit most hikers, they are often offered in different back lengths. This is because everyone's back is different. It describes the Distance between the 7th cervical vertebra and the upper edge of the pelvic bone. You can easily measure this distance with a tape measure.

But how do you find the two points?

Wenn Sie Ihr Kinn auf die Brust legen, ist der 7. Cervical vertebrae The vertebra that protrudes most strongly at the nape of your neck. You can now easily feel it with your hand. You can find the upper edge of your pelvic bone by placing your hands on your hips and pointing both thumbs towards your spine. Midway between your thumbs is the iliac crest, which marks the lower point of your back length.

Ideally, a second person will help you determine and measure your back length.

Size Chart

Once you have determined your back length, you can read off the correct rucksack size for the WeitLäufer rucksacks in the following size chart:

Back length

Rucksack size

40 – 43 cm Small
43 – 53 cm Middle
53–59 cm Large

Another way to find the right rucksack size is via the Height to go. While these values aren't as precise as back length, they give a good indication of the length that will most likely fit you.

Height

Rucksack size

up to 168 cm Small
168 – 188 cm Middle
188 – 200 cm Large

Between two back lengths, what to do?

If you are between two back lengths, I can recommend the Smaller to choose. Because the load lifters allow you to pull the shoulder straps upwards slightly if desired, thus adapting them better to your body shape. Load lifters also stabilise your pack, especially if you've packed a bit more luggage into your rucksack.

Carrying system

18 kg on the hip, not on the shoulder

Four components work together to ensure that the Endurist sits securely without wobbling, even when fully loaded: the carrying frame, the padded hip belt, three back lengths and the load lifters.

Endurist Carrying System – Details
Carrying system · PE-HD plate & aluminium profile
18kilogram
Maximum recommended payload. The four components below distribute the weight so that the shoulders are relieved and the load rests on the hip bones.
PE-HD and aluminium profile carrying frame
Contoured HDPE plate plus centrally positioned aluminium profile. Gives the pack structure and channels weight vertically into the hip belt. Weighs only 162g (Size M).
Padded hip belt in 3 sizes
For hip circumference up to 142 cm (S), 152 cm (M), or 162 cm (L). You choose the size during configuration.
Three back lengths
Small (40 to 43 cm), Medium (43 to 53 cm), Large (53 to 59 cm). For body heights from 162 to over 188 cm.
Load-Lifters
For fine-tuning load transfer. If you are between two back lengths, choose the smaller one and use the load lifters.

Packing Tips

How to use the Endurist packed properly

Three zones, a stable base. That's how the pack sits steadily on your back even with 18 kg of weight.

Endurist Packing Tips Infographic
1
Basis: Fundament & Struktur (bottom)
Sleeping bag or quilt all the way down. It fills all the corners and creates a soft cushion for the lower back. Unused spare clothing is also suitable for filling gaps at the bottom.
2
Focus: Load distribution (centre)
Heavy near the back. Food supplies, water supplies, cooking utensils as close as possible to the back pad. Pad sharp edges with clothing, stuff small items into the gaps.
3
Quick-Access: Top & external
Down or insulated jacket right at the top under the roll-top, for immediate access during breaks. Front pocket for rain jacket, side pockets for water bottles, bottom pocket for snacks. Compress with roll-top and drawstrings.
FAQ

Frequent Questions

The short answer: Endurist if you’re carrying a heavy, conventional load, Agilist if you’re carrying a light or ultralight load.

  • Endurist: Around 747g, 65L, max. 18kg payload. Classic carrying system with padded hip belt. For crossing the Alps, long thru-hikes, self-sufficient tours with conventional equipment. Made in Germany, Made-to-Order.
  • Agilist 2026: from 299 g, 54 L, max. 13 kg payload. Minimalist carrying system, lighter design. For UL setups and hikers who want to save every gram.

In borderline cases, it's worth taking a look at our Backpack finder.

The ideal Basis weight is at 5 to 10 kg. This leaves enough in reserve for food and water for several days. In total, you can carry Endurist up to 18 kg comfortable to wear without the shoulders suffering.

The stable carrying frame made of PE-HD plate and aluminium profile efficiently transfers the weight to the padded hip belt.

The back length is the distance between the 7. Cervical vertebrae and the Upper border of the pelvic bone. Rest your chin on your chest; the 7th cervical vertebra is the most prominent. You can find the iliac crest by placing your hands on your hips.

  • Small Back length 40 to 43 cm (body height up to 168 cm)
  • Medium Back length 43 to 53 cm (body height 168 to 188 cm)
  • Large Back length 53 to 59 cm (body height over 188 cm)

Between two sizes? Choose the smaller one and use the load lifters for fine-tuning.

The corpus consists of waterproof materials (X-Pac, Dyneema), but due to the seams, the rucksack is not 100 % waterproof. Water may seep in through the seams during prolonged rain.

For sensitive equipment (sleeping bag, electronics, first aid), we recommend a rucksack liner or dry bag in the main compartment during prolonged rain.

We are deliberately foregoing a ventilated back section in order to provide the minimalist approach to remain true and save weight. Ventilated systems also sweat in practice with heat and exertion.

Wir setzen auf einen komfortablen Contact back. During breaks, it helps to place your backpack with the back panel facing the sun so that moisture dries faster.
