Backpack Size Chart

Measure backpack back length

To ensure backpacks fit most hikers, they are often offered in different back lengths. This is because everyone's back is different. It describes the Distance between the 7th cervical vertebra and the upper edge of the pelvic bone. You can easily measure this distance with a tape measure.

But how do you find the two points?

Wenn Sie Ihr Kinn auf die Brust legen, ist der 7. Cervical vertebrae The vertebra that protrudes most strongly at the nape of your neck. You can now easily feel it with your hand. You can find the upper edge of your pelvic bone by placing your hands on your hips and pointing both thumbs towards your spine. Midway between your thumbs is the iliac crest, which marks the lower point of your back length.

Ideally, a second person will help you determine and measure your back length.

Size Chart

Once you have determined your back length, you can read off the correct rucksack size for the WeitLäufer rucksacks in the following size chart:

Back length

Rucksack size

40 – 43 cm Small
43 – 53 cm Middle
53–59 cm Large

Another way to find the right rucksack size is via the Height to go. While these values aren't as precise as back length, they give a good indication of the length that will most likely fit you.

Height

Rucksack size

up to 168 cm Small
168 – 188 cm Middle
188 – 200 cm Large

Between two back lengths, what to do?

If you are between two back lengths, I can recommend the Smaller to choose. Because the load lifters allow you to pull the shoulder straps upwards slightly if desired, thus adapting them better to your body shape. Load lifters also stabilise your pack, especially if you've packed a bit more luggage into your rucksack.

Concept & Material

Fits like a Running vest

Western-style shoulder straps wrap round the upper body and ensure a secure fit, even at high speeds. Made from Gridstop UHMWPE, the same material used in aramid fibre vests.

Trailist Western-style seat whilst running
Western style · wobble-free seat

Gridstop UHMWPE is one of the most robust UL materials on the market. A high-strength polyester fabric is reinforced with a UHMWPE mesh, the same fibre used in bulletproof vests. This makes the Trailist abrasion- and tear-resistant enough to withstand sharp rock edges and bushy terrain, whilst keeping the weight to a minimum.

Western-style shoulder straps
Wide straps hug the upper body instead of just resting on the shoulders. Up and down movements are minimised, the pack stays close to the body, even when sprinting.
Gridstop UHMWPE
Main material for the front panel and roll-top. Extremely tear-resistant, abrasion-resistant and water-repellent. The back panel is made from 100 per cent recycled X-Pac RX15.
Dimensionally stable back padding
A 22 × 37 cm PE pad gives the pack structure, distributes weight evenly, and can also be used as a supplement to a short sleeping mat.
Areas of application

Made for Fast pace

The Trailist stays put where other rucksacks would have started to wobble long ago. Three scenarios in which it really comes into its own.

Daytime trail runs
Ambitious Day trips in the mountains, Technical terrain, long distances. Enough space for food, change of clothes and emergency equipment without hindering pace.
Quick hut tours
Who from hut to hut but, thanks to its low weight, genuine strength. Change of clothes, sleeping bag liner, hut slippers, everything fits in, the pack stays under 3 kg.
Fastpacking & Overnighter
27 litres is enough for a complete UL setupQuilt, sleeping mat, bivy bag, provisions for 2 to 3 days. Full freedom of movement while hiking, fully equipped multi-day camp in the evening.
Maximum recommended load: 8 kg. For longer rides carrying heavier loads, the Agilist 2026 is the better choice; it can carry up to 13 kg and has significantly more padding.

FAQ

Frequent Questions

The short answer: Trailist when you’re running, Agilist when you’re hiking.

  • Trailist: 289 g, 27 L, max. 8 kg payload. West style seat, wobble-free when running. For trail runs, fast packing, fast hut tours.
  • Agilist 2026: approx. 570 g, 54 L, max. 13 kg payload. Classic hiking rucksack-seat with padded hip belt. For Alpine crossings, thru-hikes, self-sufficient multi-day tours.

For the borderline (long hut tours with moderate luggage), it's worth taking a look at our Backpack finder, which will give you a recommendation based on your setup.

The Trailist is Unisex and one size available. It suits female and male runners with a height between 162 and 190 cm.

The Western-style shoulder straps are generously sized and individually adjustable via the chest straps. A very slim or very sturdy build may affect the fit; if in doubt, write to us with your measurements, and we'll give you an honest assessment.

The lower shoulder strap pockets are on common Soft flasks up to 500 ml designed, so all standard models from HydraPak, Salomon, Naked Running, Ultimate Direction, etc.

Hard-sided bottles are also suitable, but are less comfortable whilst running. A hydration bladder is not yet compatible with the Trailist.

He is highly water-repellent, but not waterproof in the sense of a dry bag. Gridstop UHMWPE reliably repels rain and spray, whilst the roll-top closure provides additional protection for the main compartment.

For delicate equipment (sleeping bag, electronics) in persistent rain, we still recommend a dry bag or a waterproof stuff sack inside the main compartment.

Yes, the 20 L main compartment is sufficient for a typical UL setup:

  • Quilt (300 to 500 g, packed approx. 4 to 6 L)
  • Inflatable sleeping mat
  • Bivvy bag or tarp and pegs
  • Catering for 1 to 3 days
  • Change of clothes, first-aid kit, headlamp

On longer trips with more provisions or a full tent (rather than a bivouac bag or tarp), the Trailist reaches its limits. In that case, it’s worth switching to the Agilist 2026.

Yes, the two chest straps (10 mm webbing, 6 g each) are fully removable and adjustable in height. You can:

  • Mount both for maximum stability with a fully packed rucksack,
  • Only attach one when you are travelling lighter,
  • Omit both for total freedom of movement (e.g. on short trail runs).

The Trailist is currently Out of stock, the last batch went faster than expected. Sign up for the waiting list at the top of the page and you'll get an email as soon as the next batch is ready.

We don't issue hard delivery dates because we hand-inspect every backpack individually and don't want to over-promise.

From the end of 2026, the Trailist will be manufactured at the High-Tech Ultralight Pack partner production facility in Vietnam, with whom we collaborate. The design, development and quality control of every single rucksack take place at the Weit Läufer Lab in Emmendingen, every pack undergoes a manual check here before it is dispatched.

We also carry out repairs at WeitLäufer Lab, even years later. More details on the page Transparency and Production.
