Backpack Size Chart

Measure backpack back length

To ensure backpacks fit most hikers, they are often offered in different back lengths. This is because everyone's back is different. It describes the Distance between the 7th cervical vertebra and the upper edge of the pelvic bone. You can easily measure this distance with a tape measure.

But how do you find the two points?

Wenn Sie Ihr Kinn auf die Brust legen, ist der 7. Cervical vertebrae The vertebra that protrudes most strongly at the nape of your neck. You can now easily feel it with your hand. You can find the upper edge of your pelvic bone by placing your hands on your hips and pointing both thumbs towards your spine. Midway between your thumbs is the iliac crest, which marks the lower point of your back length.

Ideally, a second person will help you determine and measure your back length.

Size Chart

Once you have determined your back length, you can read off the correct rucksack size for the WeitLäufer rucksacks in the following size chart:

Back length

Rucksack size

40 – 43 cm Small
43 – 53 cm Middle
53–59 cm Large

Another way to find the right rucksack size is via the Height to go. While these values aren't as precise as back length, they give a good indication of the length that will most likely fit you.

Height

Rucksack size

up to 168 cm Small
168 – 188 cm Middle
188 – 200 cm Large

Between two back lengths, what to do?

If you are between two back lengths, I can recommend the Smaller to choose. Because the load lifters allow you to pull the shoulder straps upwards slightly if desired, thus adapting them better to your body shape. Load lifters also stabilise your pack, especially if you've packed a bit more luggage into your rucksack.

Many photos and all maps span two pages. That is why you get the book in two editions and read it the way your device shows it best.

Why WeitLäufer is publishing this book

The hike that WeitLäufer grew out of

Alex sewed the two rucksacks in this book himself, tailored to Claudia’s back length, weighing around 435 grams. They lasted for 1,911 kilometres. A few years later, WeitLäufer grew out of that experience.

That is why this book has so much to say about gear: the packing lists, the weight of every category and the question of how little you really need to be content on the trail for four months.

FAQ

Before you order

Which devices can I read the PDF on?

On anything that displays PDFs: tablet, laptop, smartphone, e-readers with PDF support. The book looks best in the double-page edition on a tablet in landscape or on a large screen; use the single-page edition on a smartphone. Each file is about 75 MB, so download it over Wi-Fi.

How do I get the files?

Right after your order you receive an email with the download links for both editions. The links are valid for 30 days and work on several devices. You will also find them any time in your account under “Downloads”.

Is there a printed edition?

Currently PDF only. Whether there will be a printed edition depends on demand. If you would like a printed copy, drop us a line and we will put you on the list and let you know as soon as it happens.

Can I return the PDF?

For digital content the right of withdrawal ends once the download starts. You agree to this during checkout. So have a look at the free sample first, it shows a good 20 pages from the book.

How is the book different from the blog posts?

The texts are newly written and edited, the photos selected in book quality, plus the maps, both packing lists and the statistics of the hike. The book tells the journey as a whole, not as a collection of posts.
