From our Long-distance hikers.
Real experiences of long-distance hikes, pilgrimages, and thru-hikes. From our customers' reviews.
The Agilist was my loyal companion on my 1,900 km long-distance hike through Germany in 2025. It was perfect for this project and had enough space for my ultra-light equipment, including a sleeping mat, quilt, and hammock tent. It is robust and keeps out light rain. In heavier rain, I lined it with a large bin bag. This way, nothing got damp or wet. Of course, the backpack suffered a bit over the three months but never failed. Probably due to my fault (incorrect, careless, one-sided loading), a seam on the shoulder strap tore during the journey, but this did not impair its function for the rest of the tour.
The customer-friendliness of Weitläufer is worth highlighting, as at the end of my tour I sent the rucksack back and the seam was repaired without any fuss. All other seams were also checked and, if necessary, fixed. That was a great service, which is not necessarily to be expected in the same form from other rucksack manufacturers. A big thank you again to the team.
Based on my experiences, I would choose the backpack again at any time as a reliable and lightweight companion.
I've now been able to test the Vaude Agilist extensively on a pilgrimage, and I'm very impressed. As a 1.70 m tall woman, the rucksack in size M sits considerably more comfortably on the hips and back than my previous women's hiking rucksack with a frame from a well-known manufacturer. At the same time, the side pockets for water bottles remain easily accessible and are not too high.
Combined with the mobile phone pouch and the net for the water bottle on the shoulder strap, you have everything you need close at hand during the day. Thanks to the continuous main compartment, the choice of materials and the roll-top, everything inside stays dry in the rain.
Overall, the Agilist is a great, flexible, and reliable companion for long-distance hikes: it sits comfortably, has plenty of storage space, and holds up well in the rain, keeping the inside dry. I prefer taking it with me over any other rucksack I've had before and felt very comfortable hiking with the Agilist. Highly recommended!
Simply unadorned world-class! Congratulations to the inventor and manufacturer!
The Agilist handled the Te Araroa very well. 4 months for 3000km. I'm absolutely satisfied with it; a few small improvements are already included in the current version, such as the fixed hip belt WITHOUT fixed (good!) side pockets and a small back pad, which I retrofitted. Perfectly usable for long-distance hiking with 5-day resupply, it gets tight with 7+ days and I had to strap the tent on top, but that's exactly how I wanted it.
I've now travelled around 1,500 km and approximately 50,000 metres of elevation gain with the Agilist, including an 800 km stretch on the GR 11 in the Pyrenees. During this time, it was loaded with about 6.5-12 kg. I carried it without a hip belt. And although I come from the classic backpack faction (with hip belt, elaborate carrying system, a thousand adjustment options): It suited me perfectly. I didn't miss a single feature. Nothing was superfluous. And also: The thing looks like new – even after contact with spiky undergrowth, rock and scree!
Where is the AGILIST Backpack manufactured?
Design, Development, Quality Control and Shipping take place at our WeitLäufer Lab in Emmendingen. The Pure manufacturing is carried out at a specialist high-tech manufacturer of ultra-lightweight equipment in Vietnam (BSCI-certified · 100 % solar power).
The reason: Ultra 200X is a demanding laminate. To process it in a weatherproof manner requires highly specialised taping machines and manufacturing routines that we cannot achieve at this level at our Lab. We pass on this efficiency advantage directly. 299 € instead of 319 €.
Questions and Answers about the Agilist.
Fundamentals & Materials
What exactly is an ultralight backpack?
A Ultralight backpack is a minimalist trekking backpack, which differs from conventional backpacks primarily through its extremely low weight and reduction to the essentials differentiates. While conventional backpacks often feature complex carrying systems, thick padding, and many inner pockets, these features are largely reduced or omitted entirely in ultralight backpacks. The focus is on keeping the overall weight as low as possible to make carrying over long distances more comfortable.
Despite their lower weight, ultralight backpacks still possess the basic features of a trekking backpack: a large main compartment, external pockets, and padded shoulder straps. However, the absence of heavy carrying frames and superfluous padding saves considerably on weight., without compromising on wearability. Ultralight rucksacks often weigh less than 500 grams, compared to the 2 to 3 kilograms of conventional models.
Areas of application versatile for an ultralight backpack: multi-day trekking tours, alpine crossings or thru-hikes where light luggage is crucial. They are also an excellent choice for pilgrimages like the Camino de Santiago. For Mountain hut tours is the ultralight rucksack also an optimal companion, as the equipment fits perfectly into the smaller, lighter rucksacks.
Thanks to the use of lightweight materials such as Ultra 200X or Dyneema, ultra-lightweight rucksacks are nevertheless very durable and are in no way inferior to classic trekking rucksacks in terms of longevity.
You can find more information about ultralight backpacks at this detailed article.
Is the AGILIST 2026 waterproof?
AGILIST 2026 offers the the best weather protection we've ever built into a backpack. The Ultra-200X laminate is 100 % waterproof in its own right, and the seams are taped, rather than just sewn. This means it reliably withstands even persistent rain.
But for absolute safety in extreme conditions, we still recommend a lightweight backpack liner or Dry Bags for particularly sensitive equipment.
Fit and comfort
Does the AGILIST have a carrying system?
Ultralight backpacks rarely have a classic carrying system. The contents give the backpack the necessary stability. Therefore, it's important to pack lightweight rucksacks compactly and fully! They do not reach their optimal wearing comfort when half-full. To give the WeitLäufer backpacks structure even with less content, a foam padding is permanently installed in the back of the Agilist. This better distributes the weight to the hip belt and cushions the contents.
For hikers who don't want to go without a carrying system but are still looking for a lightweight rucksack, there is now the Long-Distance Endurist. This lightweight trekking rucksack combines the lightness of an ultralight backpack with a stable carrying system for added comfort.
The carrying system of the Endurist consists of an aluminium profile and a plastic plate, which together provide stability and can comfortably carry loads of up to 18 kg. Despite this robust construction, the Endurist remains an extremely lightweight backpack with a weight starting from just 880 g.
What back length suits me?
To ensure a rucksack fits well, they are often offered in different back lengths. The back length is the Distance between the 7th cervical vertebra and the upper edge of the pelvic bone. You can measure this distance with a tape measure. Ideally, a second person will help you.
Size Chart (Back Length)
| Back length | Rucksack size |
|---|---|
| 40 to 43 cm | Small |
| 43 to 53 cm | Middle |
| 53 to 59 cm | Large |
Size chart (body height)
| Height | Rucksack size |
|---|---|
| up to 168 cm | Small |
| 168 to 188 cm | Middle |
| 188 to 200 cm | Large |
If you are between two back lengths, we recommend the smaller to choose. The load lifters allow you to pull the shoulder straps up slightly and thus adjust them better to your body shape.
Is the Agilist suitable as an ultralight rucksack for women?
Jep. The Agilist has a Unisex fit and is worn by many women on long-distance hikes. The S-shaped shoulder straps are cut to run around the chest rather than lie on top of it. This means they are also comfortable for female anatomy, without pressing or chafing.
The right is crucial Back lengthFor a height of up to 168 cm, we recommend size S. The continuously adjustable chest strap and the padded hip strap can also be precisely adjusted for narrower shoulders and hips. Therefore, a separate women's model is not necessary.
Does the AGILIST have a hip belt?
Yes, the Agilist comes with a padded hip belt delivered, ensuring optimal comfort and stability. It is padded with high-quality, 10 mm thick EVA foam to ensure a high level of comfort and effective load transfer to the hips, despite the ultra-light backpack design. The hip belt covers a wide size range and fits most hip circumferences.
What hip circumference does the hip belt fit?
Maximum hip belt circumference: 156 cm (fully extended straps).
Minimum hip belt circumference: 69 cm, for very slim hips. With this minimal width, the two fins overlap slightly, which is intended to keep even narrow hips snug.
What is the maximum load weight for the Agilist?
The recommended maximum carrying weight of the rucksack is approximately 13 kilograms. More weight is simply no longer comfortable to carry in an ultra-light backpack over a longer period. The base weight of your equipment should ideally be around 5 to 7 kg.
Nevertheless, after a resupply, larger loads can also be carried for a short time. Structurally, the rucksack can also withstand loads of well over 15 kg. However, whether the weight can still be carried comfortably over longer distances is an individual question.
How do I pack a lightweight backpack?
A common prejudice regarding ultralight backpacks is the seemingly limited carrying comfort. However, this prejudice can be quickly dispelled, as the carrying comfort of a rucksack always depends on the correct packing method.
- Light items down
- Heavy objects close to the body .
- Medium heavy equipment farther at the top
- Avoid excessive empty space (10 to 20 % are sufficient)
- Spikey gear Do not place in immediately next to the back
- Compress rucksack well after packing
In this way, even an ultra-light rucksack will be extremely comfortable to carry, even over longer periods and distances. Furthermore, many models of ultra-light rucksacks, despite their low weight, have thickly padded shoulder straps that can also handle higher loads well.
Why doesn't the Agilist have a ventilated back panel?
It is quite normal to start sweating on your back after a certain amount of time and intensity while hiking with a backpack. When constructing the Agilist, we also consciously decided against a ventilated back section, as this, contrary to expectation, minimalist core idea our ultra-lightweight gear and we want to keep the backpack as light as possible.
In addition, in our experience, you start to sweat at warm temperatures and during strenuous hikes anyway. Even with a ventilated back section you sweat eventually. Therefore, we opted for the current contact back construction. A tip from practice: Place the backpack with the back facing the sun during breaks to dry the moisture.
Facilities & Travel
Does the AGILIST have hip belt pouches?
The rucksack comes as standard with No hip belt pockets. But you can order Ultralight bip belt pouches which can be slid and fixed onto the hip belt.
Does the AGILIST count as hand luggage on a plane?
The dimensions of the Agilist are 55 × 28 × 17 cm. These dimensions are within the hand luggage allowances of many airlines, which often a maximum size of 55 x 40 x 20 cm allow. With its slim depth of only 17 cm, the Agilist usually remains within the permissible limits even when fully loaded.
However, remember that each airline has its own regulations. It's always a good idea to check your airline's policies in advance, especially when it comes to weight. But with the Agilist, you're well-equipped in most cases to travel flexibly and lightly.
Would a bear canister like the BV450/BV500 fit in the Agilist?
A BV450 (7 l) fits across the main compartment; the larger BV500 (11 l) must stand upright and protrudes to just below the roll-top. Horizontally, it is too wide. Pack the canister as close to your body as possible to balance the weight.
Where can I store my camera on the Agilist?
Compact cameras can be found in the optional available shoulder or hip belt pockets Store safely. These are designed to easily fit cameras the size of a Sony RX100. Most current smartphones will also fit into these pockets.
Larger cameras, such as system or DSLR cameras, are most easily attached to a hip belt using a special camera bag. This requires loops on the camera bag that are at least 40 mm wide.
Alternatively, it fits CaptureClip easily to both shoulder straps from PeakDesign. This allows a DSLR or mirrorless camera to be attached most comfortably.
