Backpack Size Chart

Measure backpack back length

To ensure backpacks fit most hikers, they are often offered in different back lengths. This is because everyone's back is different. It describes the Distance between the 7th cervical vertebra and the upper edge of the pelvic bone. You can easily measure this distance with a tape measure.

But how do you find the two points?

Wenn Sie Ihr Kinn auf die Brust legen, ist der 7. Cervical vertebrae The vertebra that protrudes most strongly at the nape of your neck. You can now easily feel it with your hand. You can find the upper edge of your pelvic bone by placing your hands on your hips and pointing both thumbs towards your spine. Midway between your thumbs is the iliac crest, which marks the lower point of your back length.

Ideally, a second person will help you determine and measure your back length.

Size Chart

Once you have determined your back length, you can read off the correct rucksack size for the WeitLäufer rucksacks in the following size chart:

Back length

Rucksack size

40 – 43 cm Small
43 – 53 cm Middle
53–59 cm Large

Another way to find the right rucksack size is via the Height to go. While these values aren't as precise as back length, they give a good indication of the length that will most likely fit you.

Height

Rucksack size

up to 168 cm Small
168 – 188 cm Middle
188 – 200 cm Large

Between two back lengths, what to do?

If you are between two back lengths, I can recommend the Smaller to choose. Because the load lifters allow you to pull the shoulder straps upwards slightly if desired, thus adapting them better to your body shape. Load lifters also stabilise your pack, especially if you've packed a bit more luggage into your rucksack.

I am currently hiking the Alpe Adria Trail and have been on the Agilist 2026 route for 25 days now. This is the best purchase decision of the year. Everything fits perfectly; the extra pockets are super practical so you have everything immediately at hand. The last 2 days I went through constant rain and everything in my backpack remained dust-free. A definite recommendation!

I bought the frameless Premier chair and I am really, really... delighted; I would never go back to another model, it's just so light!
For someone with UL and Light equipment, the 54 L are really enough for me; the outer pockets are convenient for carrying water and storing a rain jacket or walking poles.
Overall, the bag is really comfortable and well made; we’ll have to see over time whether the durability holds up.
I discovered this bag on the trails of Brittany and I decided to get one and haven't regretted it so far!
Bravo Alex for your work, I wouldn't hesitate to promote it!!

For the mare a mare nord in Corsica T1 and T2 over 11 days and over 150km of hiking, the Agilist perfect backpack has proven itself excellently. The additional ascent T4/T5 to Monte Cinto with climbing sections were also perfectly manageable with the backpack. Nothing too much and nothing too little and everything was exactly where it should be with super carrying comfort and a decisive reduction in weight compared to conventional backpacks. Highly recommended!

I've done one weekend tour with the Agilist so far and was thrilled by how comfortable it is to carry, and also that I could actually reach all the quick-access pockets, which I wasn't expecting 😉

I have had the Agilist since June 2026, having previously hiked for many years with a predecessor model. Following an Alpine hike and a 10-day long-distance hike on the NST, I am very satisfied with my new rucksack. It carries brilliantly, is super lightweight, and the rain resistance has improved significantly compared to the old one. I got on very well with the Agilist right from the start. I made exactly the right choice. A wonderful rucksack for my purposes. And it is also very reassuring to know that you can always rely on excellent customer service from Weitläufer.

I have now hiked well over 5000 km with the Agilist over hill and dale, including on the Florida Trail and the Te Araroa in New Zealand (thru-hike). When purchasing, I had asked Alex from Weitläufer to reduce the 54l Agilist to 40 l, as my base weight is now around 6 kg and my equipment no longer takes up that much volume. I love the many external stretch pockets for quick access and being able to stow everything in an organised way.
The daisy chains are also super practical for securing bags with mini carabiners, and for clipping in cloths and socks to dry.
Following slight signs of wear on the seams at the harness attachments, Alex immediately repaired my Agilisten and added an avocado pocket to my pockets.
Top service! So fast, personal, knowledgeable and straightforward.

Where is the AGILIST Backpack manufactured?

Design, development, quality control and dispatch take place here at WeitLäufer Lab in Emmendingen. The Pure manufacturing is carried out at a specialist high-tech manufacturer of ultra-light equipment in Vietnam (BSCI-certified · 100 % solar power).

The reason: Ultra 200X is a sophisticated laminate. To process it in a way that makes it weather-resistant, highly specialised taping machines and manufacturing procedures are required – something we cannot achieve to this standard using a standard domestic sewing machine. We pass on this efficiency benefit directly to you.

Questions & about the Agilist.

Basics & Materials

What exactly is an ultralight backpack?

A Ultralight backpack is a minimalist trekking rucksack, which differs from conventional rucksacks primarily in its extremely low weight and reduction to the essentials differs. While traditional rucksacks often feature complex carrying systems, thick padding and many internal pockets, ultralight rucksacks largely reduce or completely omit these features. The focus is on keeping the total weight as low as possible to make carrying them over long distances more comfortable.

Despite their lower weight, ultralight rucksacks still possess the fundamental features of a trekking rucksack: a large main compartment, external pockets and padded shoulder straps. However, the lack of heavy carrying frames and superfluous padding saves a considerable amount of weight, without compromising comfort. Ultralight rucksacks often weigh less than 500 grams, compared to the 2 to 3 kilograms of conventional models.

Areas of application for an ultralight backpack are versatile: multi-day trekking tours, Alpine crossings or thru-hikes, where light luggage is crucial. They are also an excellent choice for pilgrimages like the Camino de Santiago. On Mountain hut treks is the ultralight rucksack also an ideal companion, as the equipment fits perfectly into the smaller, lighter rucksacks.

Thanks to the use of lightweight materials such as Ultra 200X or Dyneema, ultralight rucksacks are nevertheless very robust and are every bit as durable as traditional trekking rucksacks.

You can find more information about ultralight rucksacks in this detailed article.

Is the AGILIST 2026 waterproof?

No, not in the sense of a dry bag. The AGILIST 2026 is weatherproof: the Ultra 200X laminate lets no water through, and all seams are taped, meaning they are sealed with tape rather than just stitched. That way it stands up to sustained rain. It is the best weather protection we have ever built.

A backpack is still not a dry bag: the outer pockets are open, and it cannot handle being submerged or standing in water. If you want to play it safe on days of continuous rain, pack your sleeping bag, down jacket and electronics in an extra lightweight dry bag.

Fit and comfort

Does the AGILIST have a carrying system?

Ultralight rucksacks rarely have a traditional carrying system. The contents give the rucksack the necessary stability. Therefore, it is important to pack ultralight backpacks compactly and fully! When half-full, they do not provide optimum comfort. To give the WeitLäufer rucksacks structure even when they are not fully loaded, foam padding is permanently fitted to the back of the Agilist. This helps to distribute the weight more effectively across the hip belt and cushions the contents.

For hikers who do not want to go without a carrying system, but are still looking for a lightweight backpack, there is now the WeitLäufer Endurist. This lightweight trekking rucksack combines the lightness of an ultralight rucksack with a stable carrying system for extra comfort.

The carrying system of the Endurist It consists of an aluminium profile and a plastic panel, which together ensure stability and can comfortably support loads of up to 18 kg. Despite this robust construction, the Endurist remains an extremely lightweight rucksack, weighing from just 880 g.

What back length suits me?

To ensure a backpack fits well, they are often offered in various back lengths. The back length is the Distance between the 7th cervical vertebra and the upper edge of the pelvic bone. You can determine this distance with a tape measure. Ideally, a second person will help you.

Size chart (back length)

If you are between two lengths of back, we recommend the Larger. You can then fine-tune the seat using the load lifters. If they don't fit, you can try them at home for Agilist 14 days; shipping is free.

Is the Agilist suitable as an ultralight rucksack for women?

Jep. The Agilist has a Unisex fit and is worn by many women on long-distance hikes. The S-shaped shoulder straps are cut to run around the chest rather than resting on it. This means they fit comfortably even with female anatomy, without pinching or chaffing.

The right is crucial Back lengthFor a height of up to 168 cm, we recommend size S. The fully adjustable chest strap and padded hip belt can also be precisely adjusted to narrower shoulders and hips. A separate women's model is therefore not necessary.

Does the Agilist have a hip belt?

Yes, the Agilist comes as standard with a padded hip belt delivered, which ensures optimal wearing comfort and stability. It is padded with high-quality, 10 mm thick EVA foam to guarantee a high level of comfort and effective load transfer to the hips, despite the ultralight backpack design. The hip belt covers a wide range of sizes and fits most hip circumferences.

What hip circumference is the hip belt suitable for?

Maximum hip belt circumference: 156 cm (fully extended webbing straps).

Minimum hip belt circumference: 69 cm, for very slim hips. With this minimal width, the two fins overlap slightly, which is intentional so that even narrow hips are still held firmly.

What is the maximum load weight for the Agilist?

The recommended maximum carrying weight of the rucksack is approximately 13 kilograms. Carrying more weight in an ultralight rucksack simply isn't comfortable for long periods of time. The base weight of your kit should therefore ideally be around 5 to 7 kg.

Nevertheless, after a resupply, even larger loads can be carried for a short time. Structurally, the backpack can also withstand loads well over 15 kg. However, whether the weight is still comfortable to carry over longer distances is an individual matter.

How do I pack a lightweight backpack?

A common prejudice regarding ultralight backpacks is the seemingly limited carrying comfort. However, this prejudice can quickly be refuted, because the carrying comfort of a backpack also always depends on the correct packing method.

  • Light items at the bottom
  • Heavy objects close to the body .
  • Medium equipment upwards
  • Avoid excessive whitespace (10 to 20 % are sufficient)
  • Top gear do not place directly near the back
  • Compress rucksack well after packing

In this way, even an ultra-lightweight rucksack will be extremely comfortable to carry, even over prolonged periods and long distances. In addition, despite their low weight, many models of ultra-lightweight rucksacks feature thickly padded shoulder straps that can easily cope with heavier loads.

Why doesn’t the Agilist have a ventilated back panel?

It’s perfectly normal to start sweating on your back after a certain amount of time and intensity whilst hiking with a rucksack. When designing the Agilist, we deliberately chose not to include a ventilated back panel, as this, contrary to the minimalist core idea our ultra-light equipment and we want to keep the rucksack as light as possible.

Furthermore, in our experience, in warm temperatures and during strenuous hikes to sweat eventually even with a ventilated back section Therefore, we opted for the current contact-back design. A practical tip: place the backpack in the sun during breaks with the back panel facing it to dry out the moisture.

Facilities & Travel

Does the Agilist have hip belt pockets?

The rucksack comes as standard with no hip belt pockets. However, there can be Ultralight bip belt pouches to be ordered, which can be slid onto the hip belt and fixed in place.

Will the Agilist be accepted as hand luggage on a plane?

The dimensions of the Agilist are 55 × 28 × 17 cm. These measurements lie within the hand luggage guidelines of many airlines, which often maximum size of 55 × 40 × 20 cm allow. With its slim depth of just 17 cm, the Agilist usually remains within the permitted limits, even when fully loaded.

Bear in mind, however, that every airline has its own rules. It’s always a good idea to check your airline’s guidelines in advance, particularly when it comes to weight. But with the Agilist, you’ll be well equipped in most cases to travel flexibly and lightly.

Will a Bärenkanister such as the BV450/BV500 fit into the Agilist?

A BV450 (7 l) fits sideways in the main compartment; the larger BV500 (11 l) must stand vertically and reaches to just below the rolltop. Horizontally it is too wide. Pack the jerry can as close to your body as possible to balance the weight.

Where can I store my camera on the Agilist?

Compact cameras can be found in the optionally available shoulder or hip belt pockets securely stow them away. These are designed so that cameras the size of a Sony RX100 will easily fit inside. Most current smartphones will also fit into these pockets.

Larger cameras such as system or DSLR cameras are easiest to attach via a special camera bag on the hip belt. This requires loops that are at least 40 mm wide on the camera bag in question.

Alternatively, it fits CaptureClip by PeakDesign easily to both shoulder straps. This makes attaching a DSLR or mirrorless camera the most comfortable way.

Design & Materials: Sturdy Ultra 200X for long-distance hikes

The Agilist Ultralight Rucksack has been specifically designed for demanding long-distance hikes, trekking tours, Alpine crossings and through-hikes. It combines minimal weight with maximum functionality, taking both to a whole new level. The entire rucksack is made from Ultra 200X, an ultra-lightweight high-end laminate that is lighter & more tear-resistant than the previous X-Pac VX21. All seams are taped, which takes weather protection to a level that cannot be achieved with conventional stitching. The result: over 10 % lighter than its predecessor, with better materials and significantly improved weather protection.

Smart pockets for on-the-go access„

For quick access without setting it down, three specialised pockets ensure: The elasticated bottom pocket is easily reachable with the right hand (ideal for snacks) and has a separate opening on the left for rubbish (snack packaging). The tried and tested Quick-Reach utility pocket under the front pocket (secured by a drawcord) provides space for a headtorch, water filter, sunglasses or gloves. This is complemented by a 4-way stretch shoulder bag over the left shoulder for smartphone, snacks or a 0.5-litre bottle (a zipped pocket for the right side is available optionally).

54 litres volume & organisation

With a total volume of approx. 54 litres With its flexible roll-top closure, the Agilist is ideal for longer trips. This puts it right in the sweet spot between 40-litre weekend packs and 60-litre trekking rucksacks: anyone looking for a ultralight rucksack with 50+ litres looks, gets enough volume for multi-week tours with a tent and provisions, without dragging along unnecessary bulk. The spacious front pocket made from durable Ultra Stretch, it holds a rain jacket, fleece or provisions; you can dry damp clothing (socks, shirts) on the bungee cord above it. The deep Side pockets (also Ultra Stretch) each hold two 1-litre bottles or space for gloves, a glasses case or other gear, accessible even while walking.

Comfort upgrade & carrying system

For maximum flexibility, the Agilist now comes as standard with a padded hip belt equipped. This gives you even more carrying comfort and a slightly higher comfort limit (+1 kg) for the load capacity. The Interior upholstery now extends to the load lifters. high. This noticeably improves load transfer and gives the backpack structure over the entire length of the back.
