When the AGILIST is the right choice
The AGILIST is for you if you have already optimised your base weight – or are planning to do just that. At a total weight (backpack + contents + water + food) of under 13 kg, you don't need a frame to transfer the weight to your hips. The load is simply not heavy enough to justify a frame construction.
Typical AGILIST tours:
Trekking tours with a lightweight setup (3-season), thru-hikes on marked trails (Westweg, GR routes, Kungsleden, PCT, AT, etc.), Alpine crossings with hut infrastructure (Munich-Venice, GTA, etc.), and fast weekend tours where saving weight is fun. The length of the tour is less important than the infrastructure (see below).
What you win: 177 g lighter than the lightest ENDURIST. That might not sound like much – but with a base weight of under 5 kg, that accounts for 3.5 % of the total weight. Plus: taped seams made from Ultra 200X, which make separate rain covers redundant. That saves another 80–120 g for a pack cover that you'll never have to pack away again.
What you give up: A carrying system that transfers heavy loads to the hips. From a total weight of approx. 13 kg upwards, carrying without a frame is noticeably less comfortable. And: fewer configuration options – the AGILIST is a cohesive concept, not a modular system.
When the ENDURIST is the right choice
The ENDURIST is for you if you want a lightweight backpack but aren't willing to give up a carrying system. Or if your tours require more load than a frameless backpack can comfortably carry.
Typical ENDURIST tours:
Self-sufficient multi-day tours without resupply options (5+ days of food in the backpack), winter tours with a heavy sleep system and additional insulation clothing, the transition from heavy to lightweight trekking (your base weight is still 7–10 kg and you still want a lightweight backpack), and tours where you carry gear for others – family trekking, group equipment.
What you win: A carrying system made of aluminium profile and HDPE board that comfortably transfers up to 18 kg to the hips. 65 litres of volume for large setups. And: configurability – you choose the material, side pockets and size to suit your exact needs.
What you give up: The absolute minimum weight. The ENDURIST starts at 747 g – depending on the configuration (side pockets, material) it can also be over 900 g. That is still extremely light for a backpack with a real frame. But it is not a sub-600 g pack.
The choice of material: Ultra 200X, VX21 or Dyneema Hybrid 50?
For AGILIST 2026, the material question is answered: Ultra 200X is the new standard material. With ENDURIST, you can choose between X-Pac VX21 and Dyneema Hybrid 50.
Ultra 200X (AGILIST): A 3-layer laminate from Challenge Sailcloth featuring 67 % UHMWPE fibres and a black CrossPly reinforcement grid. Designed for high-tech outdoor rucksacks, and therefore water- and UV-resistant. The waterproof 0.75 mil film on the inside is made from 100 % recycled PET. Combined with taped seams, this results in a rucksack that usually does not require a separate rain cover.
X-Pac VX21 (ENDURIST): A tried-and-tested classic in the UL segment. Robust, dimensionally stable thanks to its X-Grid structure, water-repellent (but not waterproof at the seams). Lighter than most Cordura fabrics, heavier than Ultra 200X and Dyneema.
Dyneema Hybrid 50 (ENDURIST): The lightest material in the ENDURIST configurator. Extremely tear- and abrasion-resistant, yet very lightweight. The Dyneema version of the ENDURIST has a few taped seams – not as many as on the AGILIST, but significantly more weather protection than the VX21 version.
The decision-making framework: 4 questions for you
Instead of a simple recommendation, we'll give you the four questions we also ask customers who write to us directly:
What is your base weight?
Under 7 kg → AGILIST. In this load range, you don't need a frame. Your total weight (with water and food) is typically 9–12 kg – the AGILIST carries that effortlessly.
7–10 kg → Grey area.
Over 10 kg → ENDURIST. With that base weight plus water and nutrition, you quickly end up at a total weight of 14–16 kg. That's not comfortable in the long run without a frame.
2. How self-sufficient are your tours?
Tours with infrastructure (Huts, villages, shops every 2-3 days) → AGILIST. You carry a maximum of 2-3 days' worth of food and need little volume. However, if you have a base weight of under 4–5 kg, you can also extend the resupply interval. Less base weight = more reserve and volume for food.
5+ days without supplies → ENDURIST. 5 days of food plus water easily add an extra 5–6 kg. The 65-litre volume and carrying system make all the difference here.
3. Do you want to configure – or just get started?
„I want the best UL backpack, end of.“ → AGILIST. Choose size, order, hike. The decision is deliberately kept simple, because the AGILIST is a well-thought-out all-round package.
„I want to tailor my rucksack precisely to me.“ → ENDURIST. You choose the material (VX21 or Dyneema Hybrid 50), the side pockets (Ultrastretch or Gridstop) and the size. No two rucksacks are the same.

From a manufacturer's perspective: why two backpacks?
We could have made it easier. A backpack, a page, a decision. But reality on the trail isn't so binary.
When developing the AGILIST, the premise was: What happens if we strip away everything that isn't necessary for a base weight under 7 kg? No frame, no oversized hip belt, no weight that has to carry itself. The result is a 570 g backpack that rivals the lightest packs in the world – while simultaneously maximising function.
The ENDURIST was born out of the question we received most frequently: „I think the AGILIST is great, but my base weight is still around 8 kg – is there a solution?“ The answer is a backpack that combines UL thinking with a real carrying system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Physically, yes. But we don't recommend it for longer distances. The AGILIST is designed for comfortable carrying up to 13 kg. Above that, the load transfer to the hips that a frame provides is missing. It works for occasional overfilling (a full day of water, shopping at the start of a tour), but not as a permanent solution.
No. The ENDURIST is a standalone design with a different carrying system, different construction, and a completely different target audience. It is not the AGILIST with a frame glued on, but rather designed from the ground up for heavier loads.
The AGILIST 2026 is manufactured in a specialised high-tech workshop that has mastered the taping process for Ultra 200X. This more efficient production process reduces unit costs, and we pass this benefit on to you. The ENDURIST continues to be individually handcrafted using the WeitLäufer Lab process in Emmendingen – this level of craftsmanship is reflected in the price.
No. The material is specified during manufacture and cannot be changed afterwards. If you’re unsure: Dyneema Hybrid 50 is lighter and has partially taped seams. VX21 is slightly cheaper and is also extremely robust. Both materials are designed to last for thousands of kilometres.
